What is Hypnotherapy?

Updated: Sep 25

What are your first thoughts when you hear the term "Hypnosis" ? Do you associate it with entertainment programmes and stage hypnosis where people are taken to a deep state of relaxation and then encouraged to do silly things for entertainment?

This was my understanding of hypnotherapy before I learnt more about it. But actually hypnotherapy is completely different and can't even be compared. It is a form of therapy that can help you to overcome unwanted habits, fears and patterns to empower your subconscious mind and live a life free of limiting beliefs.

The Science Behind Hypnotherapy

Did you know that only 12% of our thoughts are conscious? 88% of our thoughts come from our subconscious mind. So if you think of your subconscious mind like a computer's operating system running programmes in the background. It's how things like breathing, digesting your food, and later when we learn to walk, when we learn to talk , become second nature and we don't need to even think of them. These actions are now just programmes running in the background.

So you can start to understand how unwanted habits, patterns and fears start with a thought pattern that once reinforced over time become our normal, our belief systems. This is where hypnotherapy can help by taking you into a deep state of relaxation ,it's possible to bypass your brain's operating systems firewall (critical conscious faculty) and then make suggestions directly to your subconscious mind, rewiring your thought patterns so you can move towards positive outcomes.

In fact there has been extensive research which shows that hypnotherapy can lead to changes in brain activity and the way the brain processes information. This can lead to changes in perception, memory, and even pain perception.

Although it's important to mention hypnotherapy is not a magic cure, it can be a powerful tool as it allows individuals to tap into their subconscious mind and make lasting changes.

How Hypnotherapy Help you

Hypnotherapy can be particularly effective for breaking bad habits, patterns, fears and phobias for several reasons:

  1. Access to the Subconscious Mind: Many habits are ingrained in our subconscious. Hypnotherapy allows you to access this part of your mind and reprogram it.

  2. Relaxation and Focus: The relaxed state achieved during hypnotherapy can help you focus on your goals. This clarity can make it easier to visualise a life without your bad habits.

  3. Positive Suggestions: During a session, I will provide positive suggestions personalised to you that reinforce your desire to change. These suggestions can help you develop healthier behaviours.

  4. Emotional Healing: Hypnotherapy can help you to move forward positively without replaying old thoughts patterns which may have been disrupting and blocking your progress, making you feel stuck.

What to Expect During Hypnosis

I have written a separate blog about what happens in a first session with me, however here is a brief overview of what happens during the hypnosis part of the session:

  1. Relaxation: The session will begin with relaxation techniques. You may be asked to close your eyes and focus on your breathing.

  2. Guided Imagery: I will guide you through imagery exercises. This may involve visualising yourself engaging in positive behaviours or overcoming challenges.

  3. Positive Suggestions: I will introduce positive suggestions related to your personal goals.

  4. Awakening: At the end of the session, I will gently guide you back to full awareness. You will feel relaxed and refreshed.

Overcoming Common Misconceptions

I fully understand that hypnotherapy is not in the "mainstream" and there are so many misconceptions which I aim to tackle in my social media content. Despite public opinion there isn't a swinging pendulum used at all!

Here are a few common myths:

  • Myth 1: You Will Lose Control: Many people fear that they will lose control during hypnotherapy. In reality, you remain in control throughout the process.

  • Myth 2: It Only Works for Certain People: Hypnotherapy can be effective for a wide range of individuals. It is not limited to a specific type of person.

  • Myth 3: It is a Magic Solution: While hypnotherapy can be powerful, it is not a magic solution. It requires commitment and effort on your part and you need to want to make the changes.
